- Mushroom trumpetlike when young, petunia-shaped when older; cap with a central hollow extending nearly to base of stalk.
- Cap black when moist, brown in dry weather.
- Underside of cap gray, smooth to very slightly wrinkled but without gills or prominent veins.
- Flesh tough, thin, not gelatinous.
- Stalk gray, brown, or black (not yellow or orange).
- Other Features: Medium-sized (mostly 2-5" high); edge of cap turned down when young, then unfurling and often wavy or frilly in age; flesh dark; stalk hollow; spores whitish to yellowish.
