- Growing in clumps with several to many lopsided, fan- shaped or spoon-shaped caps whose stalks are usually fused at the base.
- Cap and stalk deep blue, black, or violet-black.
- Underside of each cap with wrinkles, veins, or very shallow, blunt gills that run down the stalk, colored like the cap or slightly paler.
- Growing on ground in northern or mountain forests.
- Other Features: Flesh gray to blue-black or black, rather tough; caps not hollow at the center; spores white.
