  • Growing in clumps with several to many lopsided, fan- shaped or spoon-shaped caps whose stalks are usually fused at the base.
  • Cap and stalk deep blue, black, or violet-black.
  • Underside of each cap with wrinkles, veins, or very shallow, blunt gills that run down the stalk, colored like the cap or slightly paler.
  • Growing on ground in northern or mountain forests.
  • Other Features: Flesh gray to blue-black or black, rather tough; caps not hollow at the center; spores white.
