- Many areas in the interior of British Columbia produce matsutake - some are quite remote, and are reachable only by watercraft or helicopter. As helicopter rental is expensive, the buying agent hopes to find a worthwhile trove of matsutake deep in the forest.
- The Terrace area produces a high percentage of the BC matsutake. This area is considered to include the Nass River Valley, Cranberry (also known as the "Zoo"), Hazelton, Aiyansh, and Kitwanga.
- Some of the matsutake producing areas are on Indian lands, and the tribes have the right to decide as to whether non-native peoples are allowed to forage.
- Other producing areas in British Columbia are Bella Coola, Pemberton, Vancouver Island (few) and Boston Bar.
