One concern with some Chinese matsutake is that some pickers will use a nail to add weight to the mushrooms, thus the need to check the product. Also, broken mushrooms will sometimes be re-attached with a toothpick, so the product needs to be checked. Perhaps the situation has changed since these photographs were taken in the early 90's.
