  • Cap lobed and brainlike, the surface strongly wrinkled at maturity but not honeycombed with pits.
  • Cap red-brown, brown, or yellow-brown, usually attached to stalk at several points but not completely intergrown with it.
  • Stalk smooth or slightly grooved, without prominent ridges.
  • Stalk interior not intricately folded: cross-section of upper stalk showing only one or ~t most two hollows.
  • Growing in the spring.
  • Other Features: Medium-sized; cap surface often smooth when young; stalk not nearly as wide as cap; stalk white, reddish, or tinged cap color.
