- Stature chunky, the stalk as thick or nearly as thick as the cap.
- Cap brainlike or wrinkled but not honeycombed with pits, the lobes not projecting outward much.
- Cap yellow-brown to tan when fresh (but often red- brown or darker brown in age).
- Stalk ribbed and folded; cross-section showing complex internal folds and chambers.
- Growing in spring or early summer.
- Other Features: Medium-sized to large; edge of cap attached to stalk; stalk whitish.
