- Cap small (mostly broad), usually with a central depression.
- Cap dark brown to tan or dull orange.
- Gills few and widely spaced, running down the stalk.
- Gills thick, shallow, blunt, often connected by veins.
- Stalk slender orange to yellow when fresh.
- Stalk hollow at maturity (and often when young).
- Other Features: Cap not sticky or slimy; gills yellowish to orangish in some forms, grayish to brownish or violet-tinged in others; stalk often fading; veil, ring, and volva absent; spores white to yellowish.
